Our Heritage

In the remote but also the more recent past, the peasants from Teliuc (also miners in the old iron ore quarry at the same time, most of them) used to call their neighbors by a nickname instead of their real name.

Apart from the jocular side of this habit (there still persist nicknames like: Coscotor, Palu, Saia, Sucale, Ciobu, Foale, Zarie, Cobet and so on, mostly mockeries, untranslatable) there was a practical one: only a few family names were common to most villagers: Zavoian, Herban, Vlad, Lucaci and a couple more; thus it proved to be unavoidable, as there also were just a handful of first names commonly used (Ion, Gheorghe, Petru, Vasile, Nicolae prevailed), that many more than one villager went by the same first name and surname. The nicknames were the ones that made the difference, as wider family names.

My grand-grand-pa Ion Zavoian who, along with his sons Petru (my grand-pa) and Gheorghe raised this household, inherited from his father the nickname “Craciun”(“Christmas”), bestowing it upon his sons. As the Craciun Family’s old wooden houses  are now long pulled down, the present house lasts as the only Craciun’s Homestead.
